MAN WHO ATTEMPTED TO STEAL POLICE ARMOURED CAR ARRESTED IN ASHANTI REGION
By : Honeybrowne Okaakyire
INTRODUCTION: A SHOCKING INCIDENT THAT RAISED MANY QUESTIONS
I woke up to yet another surprising story from within our own country, Ghana, one that left me both concerned and deeply reflective. A young man identified as Ebenezer Frimpong has reportedly been arrested for attempting to steal a Ghana Police Service armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region. According to reports, the police driver had briefly stepped away to purchase medication, leaving the engine running. In that short window, this young man allegedly jumped into the vehicle and drove off.
He didn’t get far, though. Thanks to a swift response, he was chased down and arrested at Mim, near Abuakwa-Kumasi.
Now, as I reflect on this incident, I find myself asking the same question many Ghanaians are asking: Was this just a random act of boldness or something far more dangerous?
Let me walk you through my thoughts.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?
From the details available, this was not a typical petty theft attempt. We are talking about a fully armed police armoured vehicle a high-security asset, not an ordinary car. These vehicles are used in sensitive operations such as:
Anti-robbery missions
Riot control
High-risk security deployments
So when I heard that someone attempted to take such a vehicle, I paused.
The setting was Nkawie, a relatively calm area in the Ashanti Region. The police officer, perhaps assuming the environment was safe, left the engine running while stepping away briefly. Unfortunately, that moment of assumption created an opportunity.
Ebenezer Frimpong allegedly seized it.
THE BOLDNESS OR THE DESPERATION?
I keep asking myself what could drive a young man to attempt something this risky?
Was it boldness?
Was it desperation?
Was he on drugs?
Or was it something more calculated?
Because let’s be honest, this is not something one just “tries” on a whim.
Driving away with a police armoured vehicle is not only dangerous, it is highly suspicious. It suggests either:
A lack of understanding of consequences, or
A deeper criminal intention
And that brings us to the bigger question.
COULD THIS BE LINKED TO ARMED ROBBERY?
I won’t jump to conclusions, but I cannot ignore the possibility.
If someone succeeds in stealing a police armoured vehicle, think about what it could be used for:
Robbery operations disguised as police activity
Evading suspicion during criminal movements
Intimidating civilians and businesses
In Ghana, we already face security challenges. Imagine criminals moving around in what looks like an official police vehicle. Who would question them?
This is why I believe investigations must go beyond just the act of theft. Authorities need to find out:
Was he working alone?
Was this part of a planned operation?
Are there accomplices?
Because if this was coordinated, then we are looking at something much bigger than just “attempted stealing.”
THE ROLE OF NEGLIGENCE: A HARD TRUTH
As much as I want to focus on the suspect, I cannot ignore another important aspect; negligence.
Leaving a high-security vehicle running and unattended is a serious lapse.
I say this not to blame, but to highlight a reality:
Even trained personnel can make small mistakes with big consequences.
This incident could have ended very differently if:
The suspect had escaped successfully
The vehicle had been used to commit a crime
Lives had been put at risk
This is a wake-up call for all institutions, especially security agencies, to reinforce discipline and protocol.
GHANA’S YOUTH AND RISING RISKY BEHAVIOURS
As I reflect deeper, I see this as part of a larger issue: the growing trend of risky and desperate actions among young people.
Many young Ghanaians today are:
Unemployed
Frustrated
Struggling to find direction
And while this does not justify crime, it creates an environment where some individuals make reckless decisions.
I ask myself what was going through Ebenezer’s mind at that moment?
Did he think he could get away with it?
Was he trying to prove something?
Or was he simply acting out of impulse?
These are questions only he can answer.
THE POWER OF QUICK POLICE RESPONSE
One thing I must commend is the swift action taken by the police.
The fact that he was:
Tracked
Pursued
Arrested within a short distance
shows that there are systems in place that are working.
This quick response likely prevented:
A potential security breach
Public panic
Possible criminal misuse of the vehicle
And for that, I believe the officers involved deserve recognition.
WHAT THIS INCIDENT TEACHES US
As I reflect, I draw several important lessons:
1. SECURITY SHOULD NEVER BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED
No matter how safe an area seems, vigilance must remain high.
2. SMALL MISTAKES CAN LEAD TO BIG RISKS
Leaving an engine running might seem harmless but in this case, it nearly led to a major security issue.
3. CRIME CAN START FROM OPPORTUNITY
Sometimes, people act simply because the opportunity presents itself.
4. WE MUST INVEST IN OUR YOUTH
Idle minds and frustrated lives can lead to dangerous decisions.
MY PERSONAL REFLECTION
Honestly, this story disturbed me.
Not just because of the act itself, but because of what it represents.
It tells me that:
Some individuals are becoming increasingly daring
Systems still have vulnerabilities
Society must pay closer attention
I cannot help but wonder if this young man had succeeded, what would we be discussing today?
Would it have been a robbery?
An attack?
Or something even worse?
THE BIG QUESTION: WHO IS EBENEZER FRIMPONG?
Right now, many of us only know him as “the man who tried to steal a police armoured car.”
But I believe there is more to his story.
Where is he from?
What is his background?
What led him to this moment?
Understanding this could help prevent similar incidents in the future.
Because behind every crime, there is usually a story and sometimes, a warning.
A CALL TO AUTHORITIES
I strongly believe that authorities should:
Conduct a thorough investigation
Ensure accountability where necessary
Strengthen security protocols
This should not be treated as just another arrest.
It should be studied, analyzed, and used to improve systems.
A MESSAGE TO THE PUBLIC
To all of us as citizens, I believe we also have a role to play.
Let us:
Stay alert
Report suspicious activities
Avoid glorifying reckless behavior
Sometimes, people see these acts online and mistake them for “bravery.”
But let me be clear, this is not bravery.
This is dangerous and unacceptable.
CONCLUSION: A LESSON WE MUST NOT IGNORE
As I conclude, I return to the question:
Was this just a bold act or something more sinister?
At this point, we may not have all the answers.
But one thing is certain; this incident is a serious one.
It reminds me that:
Security is everyone’s responsibility
Mistakes can be costly
And vigilance must never be relaxed
I hope that justice is served, and more importantly, that lessons are learned.
Because next time, we may not be this lucky.
If you ask me what I think, I will say this clearly:
This was not ordinary and it should never be treated as such.
