A LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITY: MY DEEP DIVE INTO THE TAGDEV 2.0 SCHOLARSHIP AT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST
A LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITY: MY DEEP DIVE INTO THE TAGDEV 2.0 SCHOLARSHIP AT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST

I have always believed that opportunities don’t just change individuals; they transform entire communities. When I came across the TAGDev 2.0 scholarship announcement at the University of Cape Coast, I immediately saw more than just a call for applications. I saw a powerful intervention aimed at reshaping Africa’s agricultural future, empowering young people, and addressing real societal challenges like unemployment, food insecurity, and climate change.
This is not just another scholarship. This is a mission.
WHAT IS TAGDEV 2.0 AND WHY IT MATTERS
The Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) programme is a 10-year initiative (2023–2033) spearheaded by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.
From my perspective, this programme is tackling one of Africa’s biggest problems; how to make education relevant to real-life challenges. For years, many graduates have completed school only to struggle with unemployment because their skills do not match the needs of society. TAGDev 2.0 is clearly trying to change that narrative.
The initiative focuses on:
Strengthening universities and TVET institutions
Equipping young people with practical, employable skills
Promoting inclusive and equitable education
Building climate-resilient agricultural systems
I find this particularly important because agriculture remains the backbone of many African economies, including Ghana. Yet, ironically, many young people shy away from it. Why? Because it has often been presented as outdated or unprofitable. TAGDev 2.0 is redefining that perception by making agriculture modern, innovative, and attractive.
WHY THIS SCHOLARSHIP IS A BIG DEAL IN GHANA
As someone deeply involved in education and youth development, I see this scholarship as a timely intervention. Ghana is full of brilliant but financially constrained students who simply need one opportunity to shine.
At University of Cape Coast, TAGDev 2.0 offers students the chance to study programmes that are directly linked to solving real-world problems.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Extension and Community Development
Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness
Bachelor of Science in Horticulture
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Master of Philosophy in Agricultural Extension
Master of Philosophy in Aquaculture
Master of Philosophy in Crop Science
These are not just academic programmes, they are tools for transformation. I personally see graduates from these fields becoming job creators rather than job seekers.
MY REFLECTION: AGRICULTURE IS THE FUTURE WE KEEP IGNORING
Let me be honest if you walk into many classrooms today and ask students what they want to become, very few will say “farmer” or “agriculturist.” Yet, we all depend on food daily.
This contradiction is dangerous.
Through TAGDev 2.0, I see a deliberate attempt to rebrand agriculture. Not as hoe-and-cutlass labour, but as:
Agribusiness entrepreneurship
Technological innovation
Climate-smart farming
Food systems management
I strongly believe that if Ghana invests more in such programmes, we will not only reduce unemployment but also cut down our dependence on food imports.
INCLUSIVITY: A SCHOLARSHIP THAT LEAVES NO ONE BEHIND
One thing that caught my attention and honestly impressed me is the programme’s commitment to inclusivity.
The scholarship encourages applications from:
Females
Refugees
Internally displaced persons
Persons with disabilities
Economically disadvantaged but academically capable students
This is something I deeply respect. Too often, opportunities are skewed towards the already privileged. But TAGDev 2.0 is clearly trying to level the playing field.
As a teacher, I have seen brilliant students drop out simply because they lacked financial support. Programmes like this restore hope.
APPLICATION PROCESS: SIMPLE BUT STRATEGIC
From what I observed, the application process is straightforward but requires attention to detail.
STAGE 1: APPLY FOR ADMISSION
Applicants must first apply for admission to the University of Cape Coast.
STAGE 2: APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP
After applying for admission, candidates must then apply for the TAGDev 2.0 scholarship through Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Academic transcripts or results
Proof of date of birth (Ghana Card, Birth Certificate, or Passport)
Certificates
English translations where necessary
From my experience guiding students, I would advise applicants to prepare these documents early. Many people miss opportunities not because they are unqualified, but because they are unprepared.
MY PERSONAL STORY: WHY THIS HITS HOME FOR ME
I remember during my time in Kwahu Bepong during my national service, I encountered a reality that still stays with me today. There were young people; brilliant, energetic, and full of potential yet they had very limited opportunities. Many of them came from farming backgrounds, but instead of seeing agriculture as a path to success, they saw it as a struggle they wanted to escape.
I asked myself then: What if these same young people were given the right training, exposure, and support? What if agriculture was presented to them not as survival, but as innovation, business, and transformation?
That is exactly why this TAGDev 2.0 scholarship speaks to me on a personal level.
FROM CLASSROOM THEORY TO REAL-LIFE IMPACT
One thing I have observed in our education system is the heavy emphasis on theory. Students can define concepts perfectly but struggle to apply them in real-life situations.
TAGDev 2.0 is clearly trying to bridge that gap.
This programme is not just about sitting in lecture halls. It is about:
Practical training
Community engagement
Problem-solving
Innovation
I strongly believe that this is the direction education must take if we want to see real change.
Imagine a student who studies agribusiness and, instead of waiting for a white-collar job, starts a poultry farm, employs others, and supplies food to the community. That is impact. That is transformation.
MY ADVICE TO APPLICANTS: DON’T JUST APPLY. STAND OUT
Let me be very clear, this is a competitive scholarship. So simply applying is not enough.
If I were applying, here is what I would focus on:
1. CLARITY OF PURPOSE
Why do you want to study agriculture or agribusiness? Your answer must be clear and genuine.
2. COMMUNITY IMPACT
How will your education benefit your community? This is crucial because TAGDev is impact-driven.
3. PASSION AND COMMITMENT
Show evidence of interest; projects, volunteering, farming activities, or related experiences.
4. ACADEMIC READINESS
Your results must reflect your ability to succeed.
I always tell my students: opportunities favour those who prepare beyond the ordinary.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: BUILDING AFRICA THROUGH EDUCATION
When I step back and look at TAGDev 2.0, I see something bigger than scholarships. I see a long-term strategy to build Africa from within.
Instead of relying on external aid, this programme is investing in human capital young Africans who will:
Develop sustainable agricultural systems
Create jobs
Improve food security
Drive economic growth
This is the kind of vision Africa needs.
CHALLENGES WE MUST NOT IGNORE
As promising as this initiative is, I also believe we must be honest about potential challenges.
Will all beneficiaries return to serve their communities?
Will there be enough support after graduation?
Will governments complement such efforts with policies and funding?
These are important questions. Because a good programme must not only start strong , it must sustain impact.
A CALL TO ACTION FOR STUDENTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE
If you are a student reading this, let me speak to you directly:
Do not underestimate this opportunity.
Scholarships like TAGDev 2.0 are not common. They are designed for people who are ready to:
Learn
Lead
Transform
If you have ever dreamed of making a difference not just earning a degree then this is your moment.
A MESSAGE TO POLICY MAKERS AND EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS
Programmes like TAGDev 2.0 should not be isolated efforts. Governments, NGOs, and private institutions must collaborate to expand such initiatives.
We need:
More funding for agriculture education
Stronger links between universities and industries
Policies that support young agripreneurs
Because the future of Africa depends on how well we invest in our youth today.
CONCLUSION: THIS IS MORE THAN A SCHOLARSHIP. IT IS A MOVEMENT
As I conclude, I want to emphasize this: TAGDev 2.0 is not just about funding education. It is about redefining the purpose of education in Africa.
It is about shifting from:
Theory to practice
Job-seeking to job creation
Survival to innovation
For me, this is personal. I have seen the struggles. I have seen the potential. And I strongly believe that with the right opportunities, African youth can transform this continent.
So if you qualify, apply.
If you know someone who qualifies, share this opportunity.
Because sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to change not just a life but an entire generation.
And this could be that opportunity.
